🇮🇳InternationalMedicine: India 🇮🇳

Who said you couldn’t travel in quarantine? This time in #Internationalmedicine, we are headed to

Which country is that, you may ask? It’s India! What’s #medlife like over there? Let’s talk to Akshay and find out!

  1. Introduce yourself! I’m Akshay Kumar, 23. I’m an Indian and I’m studying medicine here in India itself!

2. Why do you want to be a doctor?
AK: Well, it all began when I was still in high school. I have always been interested in exercising and that curiosity of mine led me to study more about the mechanics of the human body. That, in turn, led to me realizing how amazing and intriguing the human body is. Fast forward a few years, I took biology in my junior college, and here I am now!

3. Why did you choose this country?
AK: Haha the answer to this one is pretty simple- I was born and raised in India and later got an admission opportunity in a college close to my home, so, why not!

4. How do you apply for school there?
AK: Well, the students need to complete a minimum of 2 years in junior college studying 4 subjects- Botany, Zoology, Physics, and Chemistry. Then at the end of those 2 years, we attend an annual nation-wide examination
called “NEET” (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) based on the scores of which, medical admissions are allotted.

The number of medical seats available here are WAY too few compared to the number of students that attend this examination, which makes it really difficult to secure a medical seat, hence a lot of us take multiple attempts
to finally get into med school.

5. What does medical school entail there?
AK: We have a total of 4 academic years, including 9 semesters spread over a span of 4 and a half years, followed by a year of internship.

6. What does a normal day look like?
AK : The typical college hours are 8 am-4 pm. The rest of the time is spent in relaxation, recreation, and studying (studying ALOT, in case we have an exam incoming)

7. What do you do to destress?
AK: Me personally, I LOVE the gym! It’s a form of meditation for me. Other than that I work on my Instagram blog (@the.foodie.medico) by planning content or shooting videos for it . I also love watching shows/movies on Netflix. And when with friends, I LOVE going out and exploring new and different foods (food = love).

8. What are your future plans?
AK: Future plans, well, in the field of medicine I’d really love to enter the field of either orthopedic or cardiothoracic surgery. And other than that, I want to get big here on Instagram and travel the world, exploring new cultures, and shoot it all as VLOGs. Memories <3
