We get it, making a decision about your career is no easy feat- especially when its one that involves 8+ years of study, a significant financial commitment and a difficult work-life balance, so you need to be sure that medical school is the place that you should really head to. (Here’s a quiz that can help you out as well!)

5. Money, Money, Money

Let’s be real. In this day and age, while it’s always good to have a passion, you still have to pay those bills. Medical doctors are never on the lowest rung of the universal pay scale (even though your salary may vary depending on the country you practice in), so why not choose a job that you’ll be sure that you will be able to support yourself and your family comfortably? I will say, however- while at the end of the tunnel is relative financial security, you should prepare yourself to face the prospect of student loans that may take a large chunk of your monthly salary. So if you want a job with proper compensation for your years of study and hours of work, medicine is for you.

This being the case, when your line of work is treatment and cure, there will always be need for your services as a medical professional. Medical school prepares you to be ready at all times for this inevitable part of life, and ensures that you remain valuable on the job market.

3. You love learning

This one is super important because the study of medicine doesn’t end when you graduate after 4-7 years. It’s a lifelong journey of learning, reading and memorizing, that never ends. You get to keep expanding on the knowledge you have, and learn from your colleagues and other peers. Does that sound like something you’re up for? If so, Medicine may be for you!

Even if you’re not sure exactly what it is you want right now, in medicine, like Burger King- “Have it Your Way”.

Most people when asked why they want to be a doctor give the tried and true answer “I want to help people“. The truth is, there are so many other careers that one can choose if helping others is your goal.
