Yes, you’re smart, you love science and you want to help people- but is that enough? If you’ve been going back and forth about your decision, we got you! What are the top 5 reasons that you should go to medical school?
We get it, making a decision about your career is no easy feat- especially when its one that involves 8+ years of study, a significant financial commitment and a difficult work-life balance, so you need to be sure that medical school is the place that you should really head to. So, here are 5 reasons why you should go to medical school.
(Here’s a quiz that can help you out as well!)
5. Money, Money, Money
Let’s be real. In this day and age, while it’s always good to have a passion, you still have to pay those bills. Medical doctors are never on the lowest rung of the universal pay scale (even though your salary may vary depending on the country you practice in), so why not choose a job that you’ll be sure that you will be able to support yourself and your family comfortably? I will say, however- while at the end of the tunnel is relative financial security, you should prepare yourself to face the prospect of student loans that may take a large chunk of your monthly salary. So if you want a job with proper compensation for your years of study and hours of work, medicine is for you.
4. Job stability
It’s a sad fact, but it’s true one: there will always be sick people that need medical attention. This being the case, when your line of work is treatment and cure, there will always be need for your services as a medical professional. Medical school prepares you to be ready at all times for this inevitable part of life, and ensures that you remain valuable on the job market.
3. You love learning
This one is super important because the study of medicine doesn’t end when you graduate after 4-7 years. It’s a lifelong journey of learning, reading and memorizing, that never ends. You get to keep expanding on the knowledge you have, and learn from your colleagues and other peers. Does that sound like something you’re up for? If so, Medicine may be for you!
2. Endless Career Opportunities
In medicine, there are countless paths for you to take. After studying, you can choose to practice as a General Practitioner, or enter into a residency program that best suits your life goals and your personality. If that’s not what you want to pursue, you can go into research, healthcare administration, education- the options are endless, all from a 4-7 year basepad. Even if you’re not sure exactly what it is you want right now, in medicine, like Burger King- “Have it Your Way”.
1. You want to make a difference
Most people when asked why they want to be a doctor give the tried and true answer “I want to help people“. The truth is, there are so many other careers that one can choose if helping others is your goal. But if you truly want to make a lasting difference in the lives of others, by making healthcare desicions that prolong and increase quality of life, give healthcare advice and education that reduces risky behaviour and directly impacts determinants of health, studying medicine is a great option for you. Not only that, the financial freedom and respect that you may gain from this wonderful career will allow you to impact those who need it most, not only by giving of your time and knowledge, but your money as well. Yes, that means scholarships, college endowments, charity organizations that benefit underserved communities and individuals. How great would that be?
